Sooner or later, living in French means signing something. A bail, an employment contract, a set of conditions générales, a form from the préfecture. The language of those documents is deliberately archaic, heavily impersonal, and — once you know its fifty fixed expressions — remarkably predictable. It is not obscure for the sake of obscurity: it is obscure because every ambiguity has been litigated out of it.
This lesson gives you the reading skill and the two letters you will actually need to write.
| Feature | Example | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The impersonal passive | Il est stipulé que… · Il sera procédé à … | removes the agent — obligations bind whoever is concerned |
| Present as future obligation | Le locataire s’engage à … | the present tense states the rule |
| Archaic determiners | ledit contrat, la présente convention | unambiguous back-reference |
| Nominal style at maximum | la résiliation du bail pour non-paiement du loyer | see lesson 3 |
| Enumerated structure | Article 4 — 4.1 — a) | each obligation must be citable |
| Subjunctive after conditions | à condition que le préavis soit respecté | hypothetical obligations |
| French | Pronunciation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| par la présente | par lah pray-ZAHNT | hereby, by this letter |
| ledit / ladite / lesdits | luh-DEE / lah-DEET | the said |
| aux fins de | oh fan duh | for the purposes of |
| nonobstant | no-nob-STAHN | notwithstanding |
| sous réserve de | soo ray-ZAIRV duh | subject to |
| sans préjudice de | sahn pray-zhü-DEES duh | without prejudice to |
| sous peine de | soo PEN duh | on pain of, failing which |
| en tant que de besoin | ahn tahn kuh duh buh-ZWAN | as necessary |
| le cas échéant | luh kah zay-shay-AHN | where applicable |
| Ă compter du | ah kohn-tay dĂĽ | with effect from |
| dûment | dü-MAHN | duly |
| par voie de conséquence | par vwah duh kohn-say-KAHNS | consequently |
Nonobstant = despite what any other clause says — it overrides. Sous réserve de = only if that other condition holds — it subordinates. Confusing them inverts the obligation. If a contract contains either word, read the sentence twice.
| French | Pronunciation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| le bailleur | luh bah-YUHR | the landlord, the lessor |
| le preneur / le locataire | luh pruh-NUHR | the tenant |
| le loyer et les charges | luh lwah-yay ay lay SHARZH | rent and service charges |
| le dépôt de garantie | luh day-poh duh gah-rahn-TEE | the deposit |
| l’état des lieux | lay-tah day LYUH | the inventory of condition |
| le préavis | luh pray-ah-VEE | the notice period |
| une clause résolutoire | ün klohz ray-zo-lü-TWAHR | a termination clause |
| la reconduction tacite | lah ruh-kohn-dĂĽk-syohn tah-SEET | automatic renewal |
| le congé | luh kohn-ZHAY | notice to quit |
| un garant / une caution | uhn gah-RAHN | a guarantor |
| les réparations locatives | lay ray-pah-rah-syohn lo-kah-TEEV | tenant's repairs |
| la jouissance paisible | lah zhwee-sahns pay-ZEEBL | quiet enjoyment |
Where the traps are: the clause résolutoire (what terminates the lease automatically), the préavis length and how it is counted, whether charges are provisionnelles (adjusted later) or forfaitaires (fixed), and what the état des lieux records — because it is the document that decides whether you get your deposit back.
French administration works by named documents. Knowing the names is most of the battle.
| French | Pronunciation | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| une attestation | ĂĽn ah-tes-tah-SYOHN | a certificate or written statement |
| un justificatif de domicile | uhn zhĂĽs-tee-fee-kah-teef duh do-mee-SEEL | proof of address |
| un avis d’imposition | uhn ah-vee dan-po-zee-SYOHN | tax assessment notice |
| un relevé d’identité bancaire | uhn ruh-luh-vay dee-dahn-tee-tay bahn-KAIR | bank details (RIB) |
| un extrait d’acte de naissance | uhn ex-tray dakt duh nay-SAHNS | birth certificate extract |
| une pièce d’identité | ün pyes dee-dahn-tee-TAY | identity document |
| un récépissé | uhn ray-say-pee-SAY | a receipt of application |
| la paperasse | lah pah-puh-RAHS | red tape (informal) |
| un guichet | uhn gee-SHAY | a counter, a service window |
| une démarche en ligne | ün day-marsh ahn LEE-nyuh | an online procedure |
A dated, formal, evidenced demand — the step before litigation, and usually the step that solves the problem. Send it en recommandé avec accusé de réception.
| Element | Wording |
|---|---|
| Object line | Objet : mise en demeure de procéder à … |
| The facts | Par contrat du 12 mars 2026, vous vous êtes engagé à … |
| The default | Or, à ce jour, cette obligation n’a pas été respectée. |
| The demand and deadline | Je vous mets en demeure d’y procéder dans un délai de quinze jours à compter de la réception de la présente. |
| The consequence | À défaut, je me réserve le droit de saisir la juridiction compétente. |
| Close | Veuillez agréer, Madame, Monsieur, l’expression de mes salutations distinguées. |
A polite request that an administration reconsider its own decision, before any tribunal is involved. The register is respectful and the argument is factual.
Par décision du 3 avril 2026, dont copie ci-jointe, vous avez rejeté ma demande de… Je me permets de solliciter le réexamen de cette décision au motif que… Je reste à votre disposition pour tout complément d’information.
The closing formula is fixed and hierarchical. To an administration or an unknown recipient: Veuillez agréer, Madame, Monsieur, l’expression de mes salutations distinguées. To someone senior: …l’expression de ma considération distinguée. Never Cordialement in a formal letter, and never Veuillez agréer mes sentiments to a woman from a man — the conventional restriction is real and still noted.
French law is published in the JO, and the hierarchy of texts is worth knowing because it tells you how binding something is.
| Text | Issued by | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| la loi | Parlement | statute |
| l’ordonnance | Gouvernement, on delegation | statute-level |
| le décret | Président or Premier ministre | implements a law |
| l’arrêté | ministre, préfet, maire | implements a décret, locally or sectorally |
| la circulaire | administration | internal instruction, not binding on citizens |
Two maxims you will see quoted: Nul n’est censé ignorer la loi — nobody is deemed ignorant of the law — and Le silence de l’administration vaut acceptation, which since 2014 means that administrative silence after two months is, in many procedures, a tacit yes. Both are worth knowing in practice, not just as phrases.
France's administrative language is famously dense, and the state has been trying to simplify it since the Comité pour la simplification du langage administratif of the 2000s — with partial success. Most procedures are now online at service-public.fr, which is also the best free source of model letters. The recommandé avec accusé de réception remains legally central: in a dispute, what matters is that you can prove the date of receipt.
Québec's administrative vocabulary diverges sharply because the institutions differ and because Québec translates where France borrows. Key terms: the RAMQ (health insurance), the NAS (social insurance number), Revenu Québec, the CNESST (workplace health and safety), the TAL (rental tribunal, formerly the Régie du logement). Québec's langage clair policy also makes its official letters markedly shorter-sentenced and more verbal than French ones — a real and welcome difference.
